Monday Night Raw On NG Music Twitter

Wizkid and Davido put the internet in a state of frenzy at the beginning of the week, as they went for each other’s necks openly on the Twitter platform. There were multiple dirty shots thrown and brawls going on. Most notably, Davido and Wizkid went at it in a heated exchange, but Tekno and Kizz Daniel also had their brawl in the background.

The fight between Davido and Wizkid came as a domino effect, stemming from previous events, with one thing leading to another that led to the result. We can recall some of the biggest Afrobeats artists alienating themselves from Afrobeats in recent times, starting with Burna Boy last year when he called it “substanceless”. Much later, Wizkid also took to Instagram to rant, discussing his forthcoming project and distancing it from Afrobeats, while speaking out against being boxed into the Afrobeats genre, highlighting his versatility as an artist.

Wizkid & Davido Beef

This event, along with other instances of two of the biggest Afrobeats products discarding our brand, is one part of the domino. Note that amidst all this, Rema stood by the side of Afrobeats, calling all the stars to uphold the brand at every instance. We have subtly but boldly also thrown shots at Burna Boy (this was before Wizkid made his statements).

Wizkid’s statement in an interview declaring rap “dead” sparked a craze that sent the Nigerian hip-hop scene into a state of discord. Although he again went on Instagram to clarify that he never meant the Nigerian hip-hop scene, the clarity he gave came with a lot of derogatory statements towards the Nigerian hip-hop scene.

Combining all this background, the beef started when Rema came on the internet during the period familiar with most stars on Twitter when “management lets them have their accounts” (we’ve also seen this with Burna Boy). He went on a rant on many things, basically tooting his horns, calling out labels for biting off his style and trying to clone him, and other things. The major highlight is his statement “Afrobeats >> AfroAnything”, reigniting the issue of the discard of Afrobeats. This led to Ladipoe posting a meme on how rappers are watching the Afrobeats community go through “their own” after the rap is dead saga, a shot at the Afrobeats community and a reference to Wizkid’s statement earlier.

Wizkid & Ladipoe

Wizkid, however, did not take this shot nicely and responded to Ladipoe by saying he could not take him seriously because he is signed to an “influencer”, a clear jab at Don Jazzy. Now comes where the Davido beef started. Seeing Wizkid back online caused fans to troop around him to ask for new music, to which he responded to them to “beg him” using a recently leaked video of Davido on his knees begging and crying for an undisclosed reason but in a very derogatory and embarrassing manner. This video posted by Wizkid caused Davido to respond.

He came out saying Wizkid has died down on his influence and wants to take jabs at him to promote something new he is about to drop. After this, they engaged in a back and forth where both parties took heavy jabs. They called names, labeled Peruzzi as a pant washer songwriter, Davido stated that Wizkid has lost his influence, and Wizkid jabbed back, asserting that he (Davido) and his label have nothing on him even if he retires now… the matter was very heavy. Davido even went as far as calling for a duel, a same-day song release, with no features, purely both of them. The entire music industry would be elated to see such an event.

Tekno and Kizz Daniel

Behind the scenes also, Tekno and Kizz Daniel were at it. Tekno had earlier responded to a tweet that stated that he (Tekno) said in an interview that he did not sign any formal paperwork for Buga, his collaboration with Kizz Daniel, but Kizz Daniel always sent him his share of the revenue and at one time even sent close to a billion, with Tekno discarding it as fake news and also taking jabs at Kizz Daniel. Kizz Daniel replied to it, calling Tekno names and talking about how the collaboration revived Tekno’s dead career, and there was also a minor back and forth between them.

The issue stretched on, was humorous, disorderly, and encompassed all the chaos on Twitter in a fashion that the Nigerian music sphere has never witnessed before. It remains unclear about the origin and direction of all this. Many suggest Wizkid was trolling, although it nearly escalated in some deleted tweets unearthed with criminal allegations thrown. Wizkid, however, attributed his outpour to weed he took, rolled by a certain Farouq. In the days to come, we will see the end result of this discord. Will there be collaborations? Will the announced tour proceed? All in all the matter happened and there is clear contention and enmity in the Nigerian music scene.
