This interview with Boydelian has been lightly edited for clarity.
Trybe: Can you tell us a bit about your background, where you grew up and how music became such an important part of your life?
Boydelian: I come from a religious home, being the last born in the family as well. I grew up in Ketu, Lagos. Music has always been an important part of my life tbh. I grew up listening to music being played, music being created as well. My family loved music.
Trybe: What moment or experience made you realize that pursuing music professionally was your path?
Boydelian: I always knew I’d end up in music, but I didn’t know I was going to be an artist. I love musical instruments from an early age and I was quite good at a couple of them. The decision happened in late 2020 though, when I knew I had to start writing music.
Trybe: How does it feel to be signed to a label? What has been the most exciting part of this new journey for you?
Boydelian: It’s been good actually. The most exciting part for me has to be getting to create music with several producers.
Trybe: What’s the story behind your first single under the label? Was it a track you’d been working on for a while, or something fresh?
Boydelian: I’d say it was something fresh. I had just come out of a “writer’s block” when I made “ODO” and wrote it based on my emotions at the time. While with “BMB” it was pure vibes and emotions as well.
Trybe: As an artist, what are some of the major influences or sounds that shape your unique style?
Boydelian: At first, Ckay’s sound set the background for me. Coupled with other amazing artists, Joeboy, Fireboy DML, Omah lay, And a whole lot of them. Listening to them helped me hone my style.
Trybe: How has the support from your label influenced your creative process or artistic vision?
Boydelian: Well, there’s quite a bit of creative freedom. The label has really helped me focus on my strengths while also guiding me to improve on my weaknesses. They’ve provided support, but still allowed me the space to explore and develop my sound.
Trybe: If you could collaborate with any artist right now, whether locally or internationally, who would it be and why?
Boydelian: Ckay, because the first ever song I wrote was a cover of his song, and I’ve always wanted to be on a song with him.
Trybe: What do you hope to achieve with your music in the next few years? Are there any particular milestones you’re aiming for?
Boydelian: One milestone for sure is performing at the O2 arena.
Trybe: How do you handle the pressures of being an upcoming artist, especially with the growing attention?
Boydelian: I take time to reflect on who I always have been. Spending time with loved ones too, helps a lot.
Trybe: Finally, what can your fans expect from you soon, Are there any exciting projects or releases on the horizon?
Boydelian: Great music! Lots of it, for sure. I’m working on fresh sounds and exciting tracks that reflect my growth. Fans can expect something fresh, stay tuned!
